Knoxville is a quirky and fun mountain city that doesn’t take itself too seriously, and because of that, it’s one of the most exciting cities to visit.  Still, it’s not like they post signs everywhere about their strangest portions of the city or where to find the most fun.  Instead of trying and following locals to find the hot spots, here are the best things every visitor to Knoxville should experience!

Sunsphere

This beautiful and strange building, located in the World’s Fair Park, offers a chance to see your surroundings from an eagle’s eye view.  Although their hours vary, the best ideas are at night when the city lights twinkle around you.   This is a stop to skip if you’re scared of heights, since it lifts you 266 feet away from the ground.

Zoo Knoxville

Welcoming over 800,000 guests every year, Zoo Knoxville works hard to impress.  Zebras, tigers, and even guerillas are on display while they live their lives.  There are some stalls where you can hand-feed animals and others to watch animals that would be terrifying in the wild as they rest or play.

This is a great stop for kids because of the animals and because it prides itself on being educational for all ages.

Little River

Tennessee is known for being picturesque, and no area of Knoxville shows that off better than Little River.  This beautiful stream tumbles over rocks and stones and makes a charming babbling sound as it goes.  If you have a morning with spare time, put on some good shoes and go for a walk along Little River.  The serene atmosphere, respectful locals, and quite sweet sounds of the river will leave you feeling peaceful and ready for whatever stress comes next.  We all need a break sometimes!

Market’s Square

This square started in 1854 as a market for farmers coming into town and selling their goods.  Eventually, it evolved from a farmer’s market to something more permanent but still kept the homemade and artisanal feeling that it started with.  The square itself has hosted everything from concerts to political rallies and weddings, and the shops that surround it are each more unique than the last.  You can stay in the 1876 Oliver Hotel that feels like it sprung out of a high-class historical film and walk to the best burger restaurant in the city.

South Gay Street

This street is the heart and center of Knoxville.  At almost 230 years old, it’s a piece of history that’s kept young and alive by the businesses and industry that thrives on it. Ancient architecture mingles with more modern buildings and helps sum up Knoxville as a whole.  Like the city it’s in, this street can both party and work hard, from partying to hunting down Knoxville real estate.

While you’re on South Gay Street, take in the architecture and stop at the multiple local shops that make it as enjoyable as it is.  You’ll always find a new detail or piece of interest that will inspire you to come back again.  Although many of the buildings are strictly for internal business, this is still one of the most scenic areas in Knoxville.
