Trying to keep the kids entertained after over three months off school isn’t always easy. We’ve tried learning through games, and subscription boxes which have all been fantastic in teaching the kids in a fun and engaging way. However we’re always looking for new activities to try so when we had the opportunity to try out Mosaikit’s mosaic crafts for kids, we couldn’t wait to try them out.

What is Mosaikit?

Mosaikit is the brainchild of Teresa Mills, a mosaic artist with more than 20 years experience. Mosaikit offer a great range of mosaic crafts for kids. They have forty designs and each one comes with everything you will need for your creation, including tiles, baseboard and glue. You can create anything from animals, to words and even a rainbow clock. They’re suitable for children aged four and over and there’s so much to choose from.

Mosaikit Boredom Buster Box

We opted to try out the Boredom Buster Box. Although my youngest son and middle child is the biggest craft lover, I knew it would be something all three of my kids would want to try out. The Boredom Buster comes with 8 baseboards so they could do at least two designs each. The box also contains a big bag of tiles, two tubes of PVA glue, and a bag of 80 extra special glitter and lustre tiles. The baseboards are all squares and make lovely little coasters when completed.

We found that the square baseboards enabled the children to create whatever they wanted. They weren’t restricted to a specific animal or letter for example. I particularly loved that it wasn’t a messy craft activity! The glue was easy to squeeze and didn’t end up all over everywhere and completing the designs on top of a piece of paper meant it was easy to tidy afterwards. Each of my three came up with their own unique design and pattern.

Benefits of Mosaic Crafts for Kids

Mosaic crafts are a great way of allowing children to be creative and use their imagination. However there are other benefits to creating mosaics. Due to the fiddly nature of the craft, it can help improve the manual dexterity in younger children and also encourages patience. Creating the mosaic also gives an insight to how colours work together and how to create patterns. Depending on the patterns made it can also be a great introduction to symmetry and sequencing.

We found the main benefit, other than encouraging creativity, was the calming influence it had on the kids. All three of them, ranging from 5 to 11 in age, quietly sat and made their creations. There was a huge pack of tiles to choose from so there were no arguments and they happily sat and until their creations were completed. Bliss! I have talked about how to help children’s mental health during lockdown but this was something I never considered. They were all calm and peaceful and it definitely seems like the perfect relaxing activity.
