Our trip to Copenhagen in December was exactly as wonderful as we’d hoped. We’d had a magical time at Disneyland Paris the Christmas before so knew it was going to be a tough act to follow. It has been on our travel bucket list for a while but we were a little concerned about things to do in Copenhagen with kids. We needn’t have worried! Visiting Copenhagen in winter with the kids was a magical experience and there was so much to do to keep us all entertained.

Tivoli Gardens

When it comes to things to do in Copenhagen with kids, you just can’t look past the world famous Tivoli Gardens. Tivoli Gardens offers year round fun but visiting at Christmas was honestly the most magical experience. It was definitely our highlight of our visit to Copenhagen in winter. The rides, the food, the lights, the festive atmosphere… I could go on and on! In fact have in our Tivoli Gardens at Christmas post!

Hans Christian Andersen Museum

Hans Christian Andersen spent most of his life in Copenhagen and so it’s only fitting that the city has several tributes to the king of fairytales. The writer of many children’s classics such as The Little Mermaid, The Ugly Ducking and Thumbelina, is honoured by a statue in Kings Garden, where he can be seen with a book in his hand.

There is also a whole museum dedicated to him, the Hans Christian Andersen Fairytale House. Here you can find out about his life, from his birth in Odense to his adult life and his many adventures. A selection of his fairytales come to life as the displays have lights and sound effects. We bought a combination ticket which included the Fairytale House, Ripley’s Believe It or Not!, Guinness World Records and The Mystic Exploratorium. Visiting Copenhagen in winter isn’t the warmest of adventures, so we were glad to have some indoor attractions to explore!

Guinness Book of Records Museum

My eldest son loves facts and has the last four Guinness Book Of Records. When we stumbled across the Guinness Book of Records Museum we knew we had to visit, especially since it’s the only worlds records museum in Europe. As I mentioned earlier, admission was included in our combination ticket. The museum was great for kids with plenty of interactive games and activities. The kids loved “meeting” the world’s tallest man and learning about weird and wonderful records.

Nyhavn

You can’t visit Copenhagen and not take a stroll down Nyhavn. The beautifully coloured houses and relaxed atmosphere make it a wonderful place to visit. The walkways were lined with Christmas stalls selling decorations, gifts and delicious edible treats.

Christmas Markets

As well as the stalls down Nyhavn, the Christmas markets in the centre of Copenhagen are a lovely way to get in the festive spirit. There’s plenty of edible treats to enjoy and we had no problem finding somewhere to sit and take in the atmosphere. The Christmas trees, lights and an appearance from the big man himself made it a great place to spend an hour or so.

The Little Mermaid Statue

Hans Christian Andersen dominated a lot of our favourite things to do in Copenhagen with kids! After learning all about him in the museum, the children were keen to see the Little Mermaid Statue at the Langelinie promenade. The bronze statue by Edvard Eriksen has become a Copenhagen icon and we were thrilled to see it in person. As expected in Copenhagen in winter, the weather wasn’t the kindest but it didn’t dampen our spirits.

Amalienborg Palace

Whilst it doesn’t appear to be quite as grand as Buckingham Palace, Amalienborg Palace is a must for anyone interested in Denmark’s royal family. The royal family still reside there now, and if you visit the palace square at 12pm, you can witness the changing of the guards.

The Marble Church

When you’re thinking of things to do in Copenhagen with kids, a marble church may not be what immediately springs to mind. However Frederik’s Church, known as The Marble Church, is well with a visit. The children are no strangers to church so understand the need to be quiet. Visiting the church a couple of days before Christmas was a really special experience. The interior of the church is beautiful and the addition of the Christmas trees enhanced the calm and welcoming atmosphere.

Hopefully this guide will have given you some inspiration for things to do in Copenhagen with kids. Have we missed anything off? Let us know in the comments!
