If you’re looking for the best Austria walking holidays, and you like to go on an active holiday, you’ve come to the right place. When you want to spend your vacation a little more active, a hiking holiday might be perfect for you. Austria has many options when it comes to hiking. You can enjoy views of the breathtaking valleys and snow-capped mountains in this country. The best way to do this is to go on a multi-day trek. It’s truly an adventure and the memories will stay with you forever. In this blog, we will discuss a few hiking trails for you to consider.
Adlerweg
Adlerweg, or Eagle Way, is a hike in the province of Tirol. It is called Eagle Way because when you look at the map of the trail, it will resemble an eagle. This massively long hiking trail is 413 kilometres long and exists out of 33 stages. Do not worry! This hiking trail can be divided into a long 24-stage trail of north Tirol, and a shorter 9-stage trek in South Tirol. If that is still too long for you, the route is easily accessible so you can choose to do as little as one stage only. Be sure to check out the difficulties and lengths of the stages before you make your pick.
Hiking the Adler Weg is not for the faint of heart. You should already have some mountaineering experience before you start hiking the Adlerweg. Be sure to prepare well, and all will be fine. On the way, you will bypass several mountain ranges, where you will see breathtaking views of the valleys, snow-capped mountains, rivers, lakes and maybe even some wildlife.
The best time to hike this trail is from mid-June to mid-September, when there is little snow. It is important to check the weather conditions with the mountain huts, every day before you leave. They will know the latest updates about the weather and trail conditions, which can save your life.
Peter Habeler Runde
Contrary to the Adlerweg, the Peter Habler Runde is a circular trek. The trek consists of 7-stages, but can be made shorter if you take a few stages of the trail. Because this trek is circular, you can choose to start your hike in any village on the route. It is also very accessible by train or bus, and can also be reached by car. There are even free parking places along the trail.
The Peter Habeler Rund is relatively short, because it is only 56,1 kilometres long. There are 6 huts to stay in along the way. The huts offer mostly shared accomodation, and you can book breakfast and dinner in advance, so you don’t have to go look for restaurants after a long day of hiking. Just sit down, and enjoy a nice cold beer and some local dishes.
During your trek of the Peter Habeler Runde, you will see truly amazing things such as mountain lakes and green valleys. Be sure to take plenty of pictures, but do not deviate from the paths.
If you are looking for hikes in other countries, we would recommend you to take a look at walking holidays in Switzerland. These hikes might be a little more challenging than the hikes in Austria, but the views are just as breathtaking!
