They say moving house is one of the most stressful things you can do, and having moved house four times in 12 years I’d definitely agree with that! However we have picked up a few tips along the way that can help make moving day run a little more smoothly.

Get Some Help

We have learnt to accept any help that is offered when it comes to moving house. From asking someone to look after the children while we move everything, to hiring someone to help with the heavy lifting, any help is always gratefully received. It’s so easy to hire a man with a van in London, and having some help with the physical side of moving means you have more time focusing on unpacking and arranging your interiors.

If you’ve any unwanted furniture you don’t want to take with you, consider using a company such as Kwiksweep who specialise in old furniture removal and disposable. It saves you having to try and dispose of items yourself or taking them with you when you just don’t have the space.

Make A Packed Lunch The Night Before

When you’re busy hauling boxes around you might find lunch is the last thing on your mind. However skipping lunch is the worst thing you can do. If you’re anything like us you’ll end up grumpy by late afternoon because your hungry (hangry!) and chances are you won’t have food and cookware all set up in your kitchen yet. Making some sandwiches and a couple of snacks the night before can be a lifesaver. You can perch on a couple of boxes, have a quick bite to eat and carry on!

Unpack The Kitchen Boxes First

I promise all my tips aren’t food related! In all the times we have moved we’ve never been able to completely unpack every box within the one day. We therefore have learnt to prioritise what gets unpacked first. For us, it’s the kitchen boxes. There’s nothing worse than rooting around in boxes looking for cutlery or the kettle when you want to settle down after a busy day moving. Getting the kitchen up and running is always our priority so we can at the very least put the kettle on and have a well earned brew!

Keep Tools Handy

Another tip we have picked up along the way is to keep tools handy. While putting up pictures might not be an immediately priority, you just don’t know when you’re going to need your trusty screwdriver or a tape measure! We found that a wardrobe we had assumed could be lifted in one piece, just wasn’t sturdy enough and we needed to remove the drawers and doors. We only realised this while the wardrobe was in the old house and the toolbox was in the new house! It adds unnecessary time and frustration to not have them to hand so keep them with you where possible.

Check The Weather

Obviously it isn’t always convenient to change your moving day purely because of the weather but having an idea of what the day is likely to be like will enable you to plan accordingly. You can ensure everyone is kitted out in the correct attire and it also allows you to plan your day. If you know it’s going to rain later on in the day, you know your priority is to get everything moved as soon as possible. The unpacking can wait!

Summary

Moving day can be such an exciting but also stressful time. These are just some tips we’ve picked up to help limit the stress as far as possible. Do you have any moving day tips? Let us know in the comments!
