Since all our holidays and plans have been cancelled this year (thanks 2020!) we have been spending a lot more time and money on our home. We’ve bought new carpets and furniture and we’ve repainted our very boring plain white walls. However you don’t necessarily need to redecorate to restyle a room. You can purchase fabrics to add colour and texture to a room and completely revitalise an old piece of furniture.
Here are some ways you can use fabric to enhance and restyle your home.
Cushions
Cushions can really brighten up a living space and they’re relatively easy to make if you’re handy with a sewing machine. We like to change our cushions around depending on the season. We have light pastel colours to brighten up our grey sofa in the summer months, where in winter we prefer more warm, rich colours to make the room look cosy. You could even make cushions to give as a gifts, and they could be personalised with stitched initials or lettering.
Curtains
To match the cushions you may also want to make some new curtains. We have some unusual sized windows in our house and made to measure curtains can be so expensive, especially if you have large windows. Making them yourself could save a lot of money and you can pick the exact fabric you want to match your decor.
Table Cloth
Table cloths are a great way to protect tables and add colour and texture to a room. They’re also great for covering up any damage or marks you may have on a table. You could co-ordinate your table cloth with your curtains or any other soft furnishings you have in the room. It’s a good idea to add some kind of backing to the fabric to stop the table cloth from slipping and moving too much.
Throws
Throws and quilts are a great way to use fabric and are perfect for these colder months. You could use quilt patterns to make a patchwork quilt with any excess material you have and it can make a really lovely feature in a room.
Reupholster Chairs
The fabrics could be used for reupholstering chairs. If you’re ambitious you could reupholster a full living room chair and completely upcycle the piece of furniture. You can also upholster dining chair seats. These are slightly easier to do as you only need to remove the seat and replace with the fabric of your choice.

These are just some ways you could enhance and restyle your home using fabrics. It’s a great way to be creative and could be a useful hobby if we’re all going to be stuck inside in lockdown again!
