We’ve been determined this year to give our whole house a bit of a spruce-up. We’ve been stuck in a bit of a rut as we’re well aware this isn’t our forever home.
We bought the house in 2015 and shortly after our third child arrived. We are rapidly outgrowing our little house and will be looking to move within the next two years.
We’ve decided that we don’t want to undertake any major renovation work but we do want to give the house a bit of an uplift. We don’t want to spend a fortune but improving the appearance will not only make it look so much better to us, but also to potential buyers when the time comes.
We have started with our living room. It’s the room we gather as a family and the most used room in the house. It’s also the room that’s looking the most tired! Here are some tips on how to spruce up your living room without paying a fortune.
Add Flowers
One thing that has made a huge difference to us is the addition of flowers. We bought some artificial flowers and they’ve really given the room a boost. I prefer the scent of natural flowers but the lack of upkeep and low cost of fake flowers definitely appeals. We bought the pink flowers to tie in with our predominantly pink and grey living room and they really brighten the place up.
Add Additional Seating
If you’re looking to add additional seating but don’t want to replace your existing sofa and/or chairs, why not opt for a luxury beanbag? Big Bertha specialise in beanbags suitable for any room that are not only comfortable but stylish too. They have an array of different styles and sizes, and you can choose what fabric you prefer too. They all look so comfortable but I particularly love the look of the faux rabbit fur range. With prices starting at just £59.90, they’re also really affordable and can give the room a much-needed lift.
Add Pictures and Photographs
Brighten up bare walls by adding pictures and photographs. Create a photo collage from your favourite photos or add a brightly coloured canvas to make the room more homely.
Use Throws and Cushions
If your sofa looks a bit worse for wear but you don’t have the money to replace it, improve the appearance by buying throws and cushions. A throw can be used to disguise any marks and stains and really creates a lovely cosy feel to the room. Cushions can be relatively inexpensive but can really brighten up an old piece of furniture.
Change Colour Scheme
A colour change can really brighten up a room. Painting the walls and adding or replacing soft furnishings can really make a massive difference. Our grey living room was looking a bit dull but adding some cushions, curtains and ornaments have created a much more homely feel. The room just needed that pop of colour to transform it.

Replace Doorframes
If your doorframes are looking worse for wear, consider replacing them. A lick of paint can make a massive difference but replacing them could be cheaper than you think. Ensuring the interior doors and doorframes are the perfect fit not only improves the room aesthetically, but it can also reduce drafts and heating costs.
These are just a few tips that can help spruce up your living on a budget. Do you have any tips to add? Let us know in the comments!
