Independence often comes more naturally to certain children in comparison to others. Your child may be more shy and reserved by nature, or your child is already a social butterfly and likes to hang out with a lot of different people.
Wherever your child is at, you can nurture and guide them to be more independent and eager to take on responsibilities. In return they’ll be more mature and grown up in their decision making. This independent school in Enfield shows us some ways you can make your child more independent at home.
Give your kids some chores
Each week you can give your child something new to be responsible for around the house. From doing the dishes, unloading the dishwasher or loading the washing machine full of dirty clothes, to watering plants, vacuuming the home and so on. This gives them the chance to earn some pocket money on the go and learn about doing chores on their own accord over time.
Involve them in more “adult” tasks
Parents often have the responsibilities of more menial tasks like buying the weekly groceries and taking their car for a service. This doesn’t mean you need to get your kid learning to drive as quickly as possible, but take them along for the ride and get them involved in the tasks. As they grow older they’ll learn the ropes for themselves and be prepared for them when it comes to doing these tasks.
If you have other children, ask the older children to look after them
Teaching a child to look after one of their siblings increases their responsibilities and confidence levels. It gives them the chance to be a leader in front of overs while ensuring your child is safe and can learn to trust their other sibling. Even if it’s just a quick trip to the shops or a few hours away from the home, your child will feel empowered with the responsibility they have.
