East Lancashire Railway Halloween Ghost Train
There seems to be so many Halloween activities to do with the kids this year, far more than when we were children! This year we had the opportunity to do something a little bit different. East Lancashire Railway kindly invited us to experience one of their spooktacular Halloween ghost trains.
East Lancashire Railway Halloween Ghost Train : Parking
The Halloween Ghost Trains begin and end at Bury Bolton Street Station. We drove there and managed to park on their carpark. Car parking spaces are limited though and the carpark was packed when we left, so we were happy to be on the earlier train.
East Lancashire Railway Halloween Ghost Train : Build Up and Atmosphere
We had the option of four different times, with the later trains being scarier than the earlier ones. We booked the earliest slot at 5.30pm since our kids are still quite young. The kids got all dressed up in their Halloween outfits and were so excited! I was a little apprehensive about how scary the trains would be. I knew Jack (9) would be fine, but I was worried that our younger two would be a bit frightened.
On arrival the station was full of Halloween decorations and music such as Thriller and The Monster Mash were playing. The atmosphere was brilliant. We walked through to the platform past various spooky characters.
Anna, our three year old, was a bit overwhelmed and first and started to cry. I think she didn’t know which direction to look in! There was a magician putting on a show, and food being served alongside the platform.
East Lancashire Railway Halloween Ghost Train : Train Experience
We got onto the train as it pulled into the station and the minute Anna was sat down she was much happier. When it comes to days out with kids, anything involving a train is always a hit! She could still see the characters but they no longer scared her.
The steam train took to us to Rawtenstall and back. It was starting to get dark when we first boarded but was completely dark during the journey which added to the experience.
The children were each gifted Halloween goody bags, consisting of a small bat and ball, colouring activities and much more. Obviously a lot of thought had gone into them.
We were joined on the journey by various characters and all three of mine loved it, even Anna! They engaged with the children and made them laugh, and all of the costumes were fantastic.
We really enjoyed the journey, and wouldn’t hesitate to book again next year. East Lancashire Railway have fantastic events running throughout the year, including Santa Specials for those looking for a festive family day out. See their website to find out more.

You are right, there is so much more going on for Halloween nowadays. This sounds brilliant, love a good old spooky train ride!
I would love to take this spooky train, the ride sounds like a lot of fun. I can imagine why your 3 year old daughter got scared, I can see some really frightening costumes in your photos.
It seems as though everyone had a great time during the event. We love visiting events like this one during the fall. It helps get the kids out and enjoying the beautiful weather.

I like to idea of a horror train rather than just a house. And that has to be the cutest little witch ever!

The Halloween Ghost Train at Lancashire Railway sounds amazing! I totally love all the costumes and face painting, not too sure if both my kids would have been brave or scared as they do look so real

I’ve not seen anything like this before and it looks fab! My J would be terrified but for kids who love Halloween it would be a great unique experience.

Sounds like Halloween is a perfect day to show how talented people are. Putting a lot of idea for their costumes and makeup. That event sounds really great and I am sure everyone is having a lot of fun.

Ooooh I love the idea of a Halloween Ghost Train! I wish there was something like this near us! Love your kids outfits – they look super adorable… I mean scary obviously 😉
My daughter loves the ghost train at the fair so I know she would love going on one for real. Looks like a lot of effort went into making the event special for the children.
This looks like so much fun! We headed into Notts on Tuesday to ride the huge mobile ghost train on the market place, but the kids chickened out of going on at the last minute! I was gutted.
