The Spice Girls played at our local arena this weekend and while I couldn’t make it myself I’ve loved seeing all the photos popping up on my social media.
The Spice Girls played a massive part in my childhood. I was 10 when Wannabe burst into the charts and my friends and I were instant fans. We all had our favourite boy bands, be it Take That, Backstreet Boys or Boyzone, but this was the first time we had an all girl group to get excited about. We would idolise our favourites and choreograph our own dance routines in the playground while shouting about girl power. It was a magical time!

The revival of the Spice Girls has made me think of all the other great things about being a 90’s child. Here’s what made the 90’s special for me.
Saturday Night TV
If you were a child of the 90’s your Saturday nights consisted of Gladiators, The Generation Game and Blind Date. Before the days of X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent, our version of reality TV was watching people give ridiculous answers on Family Fortunes. We watched as as contestants uttered the words “Tonight Matthew I’m going to be…” before coming out dressed as a fairly unconvincing Elton John. True family entertainment and not a Cowell in sight.
The Fashion
I use the word “fashion’ loosely here! Hair mascara, Buffalo shoes and a pair of Adidas poppable trousers, what could be classier? Add a spritz of Charlie Red and you’re good to go!
Talking On The Phone
Before emails and texting we would actually speak to our friends on the phone! Despite seeing each other all day at school, hours would be spent on the phone talking to our besties.
Toys
We didn’t collect fidget spinners or squishies, we sought after Pogs and Beanie Babies. You can keep your Luvabella dolls, we had Polly Pocket and Tiny Tears. We also didn’t need iPhones or iPads, we had Tamagotchis and Gameboys!
In some ways the 90’s seems like a lifetime ago, yet I remember them so clearly. What are your memories of the 90’s? Let us know in the comments!
