Small Person, Big Wardrobe! How To Make The Most Of Your Storage Space

It can be really hard to stay on top of tidying at the best of times. When you share your house with small people it can be nigh on impossible. But, with the help of a few savvy strategies and the right kind of storage it becomes a whole lot less stressful.

Space for Clothes

Very small children don’t need much hanging space, if any at all. Hanging up tiny clothes might feel like too much effort, and if that’s the case then a chest of drawers will do the job.

Alternatively, if you like the order and ease of finding things that hanging gives, then why not install extra rails into a wardrobe so you can hang small items in tiers? This can be super useful if two or more children share a room and wardrobe space, as they can each have their own rails.

Or you could put a plastic tower drawer at the bottom of the wardrobe under the existing rail. You can store all the folding items in there and do away with the need for a freestanding chest. It saves floor space and leaves more room for playing.

If you have precious heirloom items such as christening robes, handcrafted baby shawls, or toys passed down through the family, you might want to consider self storage. The clean, dry environment will help preserve them in good condition. And of course it’s a handy way of saving quality items to hand down to younger children so you’re not cluttering up valuable wardrobe space.

Space for Toys

Kids go through phases with their toys and games, so what’s loved this week can be totally disowned next week when the next craze comes along. But, give it a month or two and the first object will probably be missed or loved again.

Self storage is the answer. You can rent a large or small room (or a locker) and kit it out with drawers or free standing shelves to safely house all the things you’re not using. There is plenty of self storage in Birmingham, where we are, and bound to be locally to you too.

With stuff in self storage, you can cope with rapidly changing favourites without it costing a fortune, or causing tears and upset because you got rid of something you thought would never be wanted again.

Space for Favourite, Everyday Things

Once you’ve sorted out how best to organise clothing and which toys can be put away for a while, it’s time to think about everyday toys and games.

Use shelves and suitable tubs or baskets for favourite books, collections of toys like building bricks, paints and crayons, soft toys or boxed games, which all tend to get reached for regularly.

Install shelves at a height that kids can reach, the way they do in primary schools. Even very young children can then help themselves, and it’s easier to encourage them to tidy up afterwards if they can easily reach the place where something goes.

When you’re planning storage for kids’ things, get them involved if you can. Even toddlers can have favourite colours and prefer one type of tub over another. As long as they’re making choices you can live with, why not let them have a say.

There are so many storage options these days, with everything from pretty boxes to functional cabinets and self storage for overflow items. It makes it relatively easy to find room for all the things little people need and use.
