Small homes can definitely have their advantages. They’re cosy, easier to heat and can be cheaper to maintain. However the lack of space can be an issue. Luckily there are ways to create more space in a small home, from subtle interior adjustments to more creative renovation tasks.
One way to increase space is to consider a change in your staircase. Quite often stairs can take up a lot of room, particularly to the lower floors. You could consider steel spiral stairs. Spiral staircases free up a lot of space on the lower ground as well as being a stylish addition to your home. Fontanot stairs designers specialise in innovative and contemporary stair designs that could be just what you’re looking for.
If your rooms are small then consider using companies that offer a bespoke service. For example, if your bathroom isn’t the biggest, have it custom designed to make the most of the space you have got. Visit a bathroom showroom in North London for inspiration and assistance in creating the ideal bathroom for your space.
Sometimes it may not be the actual space you’re looking for, but rather the illusion of space. Dark rooms can often make it seem cramped and dull. Don’t underestimate the affect natural light can have on a room. Large windows can make a room seem larger and more airy. Stick to lighter colours to open up your space and consider the use of mirrors to give that illusion of a large room.
If it’s storage you’re short on, ensure you’re making full use of wall space. Our house is relatively small but we do have high ceilings. We therefore make the most of the space by using tall book shelves and floor to ceiling storage. You might want to consider installing additional shelves to the walls to store items such as books and ornaments. Fitted wardrobes and other fitted furniture are also perfect for small spaces.
Walls can often make a space seem cramped and restricted. Removing the walls and creating a more open plan living space can make the rooms seem so much larger. The space taken up by the walls can be utilised in a much more efficient way. Our dream home would be mostly open plan. It can really allow more natural light which, as mentioned earlier, can really make a space seem more airy and spacious.
If you haven’t already, consider boarding the floor to your loft. Quite often loft space is not utilised to its full potential. Adding flooring boards above the insulation creates an additional floor of space. This can be used as additional storage, or could even be converted into an extra room.
These are just some ways you can free up some space inside your small home. Do you have any additional tips you could share? Let us know in the comments.
