Our Must-See European Cities : Family Bucket List

I’ve written previously about our family travel bucket lists. We don’t just have one, we have several! I’ve recently written about our long haul wish list, but for todays post I’m looking to places a little closer to home. There are so many European cities I would love to visit. We’re not afraid to travel to cities with the kids, they’re used to it by now! However we do prefer to travel to places we know the children would enjoy. Here’s our European cities bucket list.

Copenhagen

Copenhagen, and Denmark in general, is known for being child friendly and Denmark’s capital is high on our list of cities to visit with the kids. One of the main reasons we’d love to visit Copenhagen is for the famous Tivoli Gardens. Hans Christian Anderson and Walt Disney were both visitors, so if it’s good enough for them…!

2020 Update: We visited in December 2019 and had the most magical festive weekend in Copenhagen. It’s definitely somewhere we would love to return to.

Reykjavik

The capital of Iceland may not be at the top of everyone’s holiday destinations, but it’s definitely on our ours! We would love to explore Iceland with the kids. We got married in the snow, so we certainly don’t mind a bit of cold! From the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa complex to whale watching and visiting Hallgrimskirkja church, there’s several things I could tick off my bucket list. However none would be bigger than being able to see the Northern Lights. Mellissa at The Diary Of A Jewellery Lover has some great money savings tips for a trip to Iceland.

Paris

We visited Paris for our tenth wedding anniversary last December but we didn’t venture outside of Disneyland Paris. We unfortunately timed our visit at the same time as the Paris riots and so we were advised to avoid the city centre itself. I’d therefore love to go back and finally see the Arc De Triomphe and the Eiffel Tower in person.

Rome

Both of our sons have recently studied Ancient Rome at school and are desperate to see the Colosseum. We are staying outside of Rome during our trip to Italy in a few weeks time so hopefully we’ll be able to make their dream a reality. I personally want to throw a coin in the Trevi Fountain whilst my husband’s wish list includes St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Museums.

2020 Update: We visited Rome during the Summer of 2019 and had a fantastic time. We stayed on the outskirts of Rome at Camping Village Fabulous. It was the perfect base for both travelling into Rome and also relaxing by the pool.

Vienna

We were married in Salzburg so Austria will always have a special place in our hearts. However we have never made it to the capital city, Vienna. Schönbrunn Palace is one of the places we’d love to visit and I think the kids would love it too, especially the gardens and children’s museum. I’m also sure they’d love Prater Theme Park, especially the famous giant ferris wheel.

Stockholm

Stockholm is known for being extremely child friendly, with several children’s attractions and exhibits. I’d love to take the kids to the Junibacken interactive museum and I know my science-mad son would love Tekniska, the science and technology museum. I’m sure they’d also have a ball at Grönalund amusement park.

  • I agree with everything on this list, most have been on my travel bucket list for forever. I'd also like to go back to England.

  • I love Stockholm and have been wanting to visit this lovely city for a while now. I am hoping to go there next summer with my family

    • There are so many wonderful cities in Europe on my travel bucket that I want to visit with Reykjavik top of the list. Iceland is full of so many natural wonders, it would be a dream come true to see them especially the northern lights.

  • Paris and Rome are the ones that are on my bucket list! What an adventure these would be though. I wouldn’t mind adding Copenhagen to that list though.

  • These are all on my bucket list too. We've been near Paris but didn't get the chance to actually go in.

  • Having to all of these except Iceland's capital, I can highly recommend them though the Scandinavians capitals will cost some pretty pennies.

  • Thanks for this, we love city breaks but so far have stuck to Spain and Disneyland Paris. I really want to try Stockholm though so I’m going to pitch this to the other half now I know it’s child friendly.

  • City breaks can be good fun and work well for families. It's nice to get out and explore somewhere new.

  • I have only been abroad twice and both times where to Gran Canaria. I would love to visit all of these places.

  • Vienna is on my bucket list too.....I definitely don't want to take the kids though ;)

  • I would love to go on a city break just about anywhere atm! I personally really want to see the Northern Lights at some point!
