Helping Your Child Prepare for the School Bus

If you’ve moved house or moved your child to a new school, you might find that they need to take the bus for the first time. A private school in Hammersmith has a great set of tips on how to prepare children for the school bus that we’d like to share with you.

Safety First

Buses are moving vehicles which means that there are risks to be aware of and ways to prevent them from happening. The most important rule is to remain seated while the bus is moving and use handrails when getting off.

Running into Issues

Public transport isn’t always reliable. Buses can get delayed or even cancelled. Preparing your child for these issues in advance can make sure that they’re not thrown off when they happen and are able to find a safe way to school. That might involve teaching them alternative bus routes or a way to walk to school in the worst-case scenario.

Make them Feel Excited

Catching the bus or travelling anywhere alone in general can be scary. To settle your child’s nerves and help them adapt well to the change, reassure them that they’ll get the hang of taking the bus in no time. Talk to them about how this is a big step and how soon they’ll be able to use the bus to go out with their friends to get them excited about this change.

Find Travel Companions

A bus buddy can make this transition less daunting. Speak to their friends’ parents to find pals that they can get the bus with. That way you’ll also have some peace of mind knowing that they’ll get to school safe and sound.

Practice Run

Going over the bus route a few times can help them get used to the stops along the way and feel confident in taking the bus. While you’re on your practice runs, point out significant landmarks and buildings along the way so that they know what to look out for as they approach school.
