So your child is finally school-aged and you’re getting ready to send them to school for the first time next fall. This is an emotional time for any parent. For some parents, this is the first time that their children are away from home!
If this is your first child, you might not know how to prepare for school. What do you need to do to prepare yourself and your child alike?
We’re here to help. Read on to learn all about basic school preparation so you and your child are ready for the big day.
Your child needs plenty of time to prepare for the idea of going to school for the first time, especially if they were never in daycare. Remember, this is a big deal for you, but it’s an even bigger change for your child.
Start talking to your child far ahead of time (preferably when they’re still a toddler) about what it’s going to be like when they’re at school. You can even play “pretend school” to get them ready (and help them get ahead before the school year even starts). Talk to them about why they’re going to school and how much fun it can be.
Talking isn’t always enough for nervous children. While some kids will be excited to go to school for the first time, others need an extra push. Show your child shows and books about kids who are going to school.
When your child sees characters that they can relate to, they’ll feel more comfortable when it’s time for them to go to school for the first time.
So how do you prepare yourself for your child’s first day of school?
Make sure that you prioritize self-care. New parents struggle with the idea of their children not being home all of the time (especially stay-at-home parents). Your child is growing up and getting more independent!
Research local schools so you feel confident that your child is going to have a great learning experience. Whether you pick a high-rated public school or a local Montessori school (like montessoridowntown.com), you want to know that your child’s education is in good hands.
If you’re a stay-at-home parent, do something nice for yourself on your child’s first day. Hang out with a friend, go to a spa, or do a favorite hobby that you never have time for.
While this is well in the future, it’s good to plan ahead for the first day of school.
Create a comforting nighttime routine for the child. Read them a book before bed and make sure that they’re ready to get up early. Have them help you pick out their first-day outfit and set it out for the morning.
Meal-plan the night before so making lunch is easy in the morning. Consider packing a special treat in your child’s lunchbox.
If your child has any concerns, address them the night before so you don’t have to spend extra time in the morning.
Your child is about to take a big step! Use these tips for how to prepare for school to help them. This is going to be a big change, but your child has a bright future, so you have to be ready!
