Understanding Your Child’s Curriculum

So, you want to help your child with their school work but don’t know where to start. Well, you’re in the right place. We have teamed up with an independent school in Leatherhead to share 5 simple ways that you can understand your child’s curriculum.

What Is the Curriculum?

The national curriculum determines what children should be taught at school and where they should be in their learning and development. This is broken down into age groups known as “key stages”.

Talk to Their Teachers

Your child’s teachers are probably the most clued-up people that you can talk to about their curriculum. They’re the ones that have been trained to deliver it and will be able to report back to you on how your child is progressing in comparison. This can help you to identify areas of improvement and find the resources that you need to get them up to speed.

School Website

While the national curriculum outlines the basis for school lessons, it varies somewhat from school to school based on a range of factors. Factors like whether they are state-run or private and their geographical location. Therefore, the best source to refer to when looking into your child’s curriculum is their school website.

Speak to Other Parents

Parent communities are great for staying in the loop. Other parents, especially those of your child’s peers can help you learn about what they’re doing at school and how you can help. Most schools have a PTA which is sort of like an alliance for parents to have their say on the running of their child’s school and offer their help.
