Helping Your Child Become a Better Problem Solver

Solving problems is a core part of all of us, as it makes us resourceful and more skilled individuals. It will therefore be an important skill to teach your child from a young age as well, in order to give them the confidence to go forward with their development. Here are some ways you can help your child become a better problem solver.

Pose different obstacles for your child to master

There’s a lot to learn in solving problems on a daily basis. They will always vary in difficulty and your child will have to pick up quickly how to navigate these different scenarios. In that, you can pose a range of different issues to your child to help them learn to overcome what could come up in the future. The key to handling this is by giving your child a wide range of obstacles to overcome. For example: spilling food over, or broken toys, then moving to if your child falls over, or if there’s a disagreement happening.

Identify ways your child can improve their independence

Being independent relies on what your child knows they can do in different situations without you needing to be there. It also means your child is going to be a lot more reliable and resilient in the future, making good time for them to feel more comfortable in their surroundings. You can give them chores to let them explore ways they can be relied upon in the home, and it gives your child a lot more confidence to manage problems on their own. Let your child make decisions more often, or let them take charge of what can happen in the day.

Make time for team-based activities

Thankfully your child is going to have a lot of experience in this already, thanks to their school’s range of extracurricular activities. This private school in Kent for instance has a range of different activities for children. There’s a lot you can replicate at home by playing sports together as a family, making a work of art together, or baking a cake with friends.
