Resilience is handled by all of us in varying ways that allow us to overcome obstacles, handle difficult situations and also provide support for others. As a child we have yet to understand how important resilience training can be, but over time it can be taught and practiced throughout life.
I’ve teamed up with a drama school in Somerset to show you ways of giving your child resilience training using real life situations.
Your child learns best from what’s happening around them, so it’s best to show how you handle your own problems and display a level of positivity within that. Resilience is built on how humans bounce back from negative thoughts and feelings, which we will have all learnt from our own parents. Show that you can help your child too by being a good role model for them to follow.
Common problems in your local area often means communities come together to solve it. This is where you can get involved in local problems with your child. Litter picking, helping at a local event or supporting people in a care home are all great examples of ways children can understand other people’s obstacles and how they can be resolved with a bit of help. Children can then learn how to be resilient to such issues in the future and how they can support others.
It’s okay to be upset and it’s also okay to show emotion in front of others. Over time, though, we should learn to use that emotion in other ways. Be on hand when your child isn’t sure what to do and is overwhelmed by the situation, they could need that extra bit of support to guide them through. Help them get back on track.
