Life is nothing short of hurdles with two steps back for every step made forward. By instilling a positive attitude for trying new things and teaching perseverance, we can help our children to achieve the greatness that we know that they are capable of.
A college in Hampshire shares how you can teach your child to overcome obstacles.
Demonstrating fearlessness and excitement to try new things will teach your child to do the same. In times of challenge, the first leap forward to try can often be the biggest roadblock to achieving success.
There will be times where your child faces a challenge that they will be reluctant to finish which is where having perseverance will see them through. To help your child persevere during difficult times, get them to remember why they started in the first place. Creating a list of goals for the short, medium and long term can help to reaffirm this.
It might be an old cliche but it’s true. The lessons that you learn and the growth that you see along the way is far more rewarding than winning itself. Overcoming obstacles allows us to build new skills and develop as people. This could be the ability to sprint faster than you could before or becoming a whizz at maths. Setting goals to reach can help to shine a light on the not-so-obvious achievements your child makes along the way.
Having the reassurance of your words can give a child the courage and confidence they need to carry on. Always be uplifting but mindful of selling false hope as this can do more damage to self-belief in the long run.
