Whilst we’re in lockdown we’re trying to get a bit more adventurous with what we eat. I’m trying to use up as much as I can from things we already have in the cupboards. I’ve been mixing stuff together to create new frugal recipes. Two recipes that have proven to be a success, both for us and the kids, have been creations using tinned hot dogs. The kids love hot dogs and I’ve been trying to incorporate them into recipes using ingredients we already have in. We use Ye Olde Oak Hot Dogs as they’re the kids favourites.
We love incorporating sausages into pasta dishes and it’s easy to substitute traditional sausages for hot dogs. This recipe is always a massive success with all three of our kids. It’s easy to adapt and you can make it as mild or as spicy as you wish. Check here for the full Hot Dog and Spicy Tomato Pasta recipe.
For another quick and inexpensive pasta dish, you could try this delicious chorizo spaghetti recipe.
This savoury rice dish is another hit with the kids (and adults!) in our family. It’s easy to adapt as you can use whatever ingredients you have in. You could add extra meat such as chicken if you wish. It’s also a great way of using up spare veg and the kids don’t even realise they’re eating carrots and peas! It can be ready in a really short amount of time so it’s the perfect midweek meal. Click here for the full Hot Dog Fried Rice recipe.
Both dishes were a huge success, the kids loved them and barely noticed the added veg I sneaked in! They’re cheap and easy meals and perfect for lockdown since all the ingredients we already had in.
Disclaimer : We were offered complimentary hot dogs to use in our recipes.
