Learning styles are generally split into three categories, visual, auditory and kinaesthetic. Each style relates to the senses that your child uses most when learning, for example seeing, listening or feeling. Children will usually show a balance of all three styles; however there is often one style that is more dominant. Working out which is your child’s dominant learning style will help you to choose their most suited educational techniques.
Here is some helpful information from an independent boys’ school in Twickenham on understanding your child’s learning style…
Visual learners like to see what they are learning about. They enjoy learning using books and videos and they like to have instructions demonstrated to them. They are usually very good at remembering things that they have seen and are very observant.
When teaching visual learners it is a good idea to draw on a whiteboard or use educational videos. Your child may also like to draw pictures about what you have been learning.
This type of learner engages most effectively through sound. They learn best when the teacher provides verbal instructions and they like to solve problems by discussing them. They are also more likely to remember key details by repeating certain words out loud.
Auditory learners like to listen to music and will use rhythm and repetition to help with memory. If your child is an auditory learner, you may often find them daydreaming, but don’t let this worry you, they are actually busy processing all the information they have heard.
Kinaesthetic learners thrive in a setting where there are a lot of hands-on activities. These children are most engaged when taking part in experiments or art and crafts. You will also find that kinaesthetic learners are more motivated by subjects like Drama and PE, where there is a lot of physical activity to keep them engaged.
