Drama lessons in schools are incredibly beneficial to children because they support many academic and personal skills. For example, drama classes and school performances can help to build confidence and improve literacy skills.
I have teamed up with an independent school in Guildford to explore the many benefits that drama lessons offer.
Drama helps to build a child’s confidence. Speaking clearly and confidently doesn’t come naturally to all children. However, these skills can be learnt and practiced during these lessons. Drama also requires children to perform in front of their classmates; which is a really great way to build confidence. These opportunities help children to step out of their comfort zone in a safe and structured environment.
Through performing arts children learn how to follow a script when acting. Not only will this help to improve a child’s reading skills, but it will also introduce them to different ways of using language, and improve their vocabulary. Script reading and writing exercises will also help to enhance spelling and punctuation.
Drama lessons are a great way to encourage teamwork, which is important for children because it helps them to form friendships and work together to achieve shared goals. Furthermore, through performing arts children will experience different opinions and perspectives. This will teach them how to respect, support and encourage each other.
Drama and school performances allow children to experience ‘behind the scenes’ activities. For example, children can help to make costumes or get involved in set design. School shows also give students an opportunity to help with lighting and sound. Furthermore, drama teaches children about famous plays and movies, which could give them a passion for creative writing in the future.
