Teaching Your Child to Respect Other Cultures

Learning about different cultures with your child will help them to respect and celebrate diversity. It will also teach them about the many traditions and customs practiced around the world.

Here is some great advice from a public boys’ school in Hertfordshire on how to teach your child to respect other cultures…

Lead By Example

Parents are the most influential role models a child has. It is important that you lead by example, especially when it comes to teaching your child to respect other cultures. If your child sees you treating all people equally, regardless of cultural differences, they will do the same. Celebrate diversity and nurture your child’s respect for other cultures by taking time to learn about them.

Make A Calendar

Another fun way to learn about other cultures is to explore various holidays and celebrations that take place around the world. These might include Chinese New Year, Diwali, Ramadan or The Day of the Dead. Add these events to your family calendar and use each one as an opportunity to teach your child about the traditions taking place. Perhaps you could join in with some of the customs at home?

Explore New Foods

Expand your child’s cultural awareness through food. Cooking together and trying new foods will introduce your child to many new flavours and ingredients from around the world. In addition, your child will learn about various utensils and dining etiquettes shared by other cultures. For example, if you haven’t eaten with chopsticks before, perhaps you could give them a go at dinner time!

Learn Together

Reading books and watching documentaries is an ideal way for your child to learn about different cultures. Books and technology can help to transport children to anywhere in the world and experience new lifestyles. Spend time with your child exploring various cultures online and reading books together. You could choose a different country each week and try to find interesting facts.
