Supporting Your Child with their Mental Health

Mental health is crucial to giving your child the best chances in life at growing naturally and helping them understand what they need to do to better their development. This is often why schools, such as this nursery in Cambridge, have a duty of care for all children. Oftentimes pastoral care will be a clear option that children can explore as well.

At home, you can adopt some of these same methods to help your child manage their stress. Here are some top tips to support your child.

Give your child the freedom to speak openly

Being able to talk freely in front of others is what makes us more open and engaged with each other. Children won’t know this at first, and so showing them that they can be open and honest with you will give them a lot more confidence in revealing what could be the issue, if there is one, or areas that they are struggling with. In doing this on a regular basis you are helping your child learn to be comfortable around you.

Go down to their level

We all have bouts of stress and dips in our mental health. It’s a natural reaction and is very common in people of all ages. Therefore, being able to relate to a child’s growth and understanding is key in giving them that platform to improve. Talk about times from the past where you have gone through something tough, and show them what you did to overcome those issues.

Remind your child of those core values

Core values, like compassion, kindness, honesty and care will give your child the awareness of what they need to do to be able to move forward. If your child knows how to be sincere, and take apart the feelings they are having, it makes for an easier adaptation to difficult emotions. And having those skills will ensure your child is confident, resilient and keen to improve themselves.
