How to Raise an Optimistic Child

Optimism is a positive mental attitude. Having an optimistic outlook helps us to feel happy and confident and it can also help us to feel motivated. Teaching children how to be optimistic will help them to prepare for many of life’s obstacles and challenges.

To help your child develop a positive outlook on life, here are some great tips from an independent college located in Bath

Growth Mindset

Teach your child how to develop a ‘growth mindset’. This method of positive thinking will support your child through challenges and setbacks. Children with a growth mindset believe that their abilities will improve over time, which will encourage them to keep trying. A growth mindset will also teach your child how to view mistakes as learning opportunities.

Stay Calm

Children learn from their parents, so it is important that you demonstrate an optimistic attitude for your child to follow. When something goes wrong or you make a mistake it is easy to act on impulse and get frustrated. However, try to take a more calm approach to the situation, by taking a deep breath and thinking before you react.

Be Supportive

Talk to your child about their hopes and dreams, and always encourage their passions. Discuss what steps they will need to take in order to reach their goals and reassure your child that you will always be there to support them.

Practice Gratitude

Practising daily gratitude with your child is a great way to help them look for the positives in their life. Gratitude is such an effective technique for maintaining an optimistic attitude and it will also support your child’s mental health. A simple way to practice gratitude is by thinking of three things you are grateful for each morning.

Give Responsibility

Finally, in order to help your child develop an optimistic attitude, you will need to give them more responsibilities. Entrusting your child to complete tasks alone will help to make them feel more capable. Ask your child to help with some simple jobs around the house, such as setting the table for dinner or feeding a pet. This will increase their feelings of competency and help them to feel good about themselves.
