It’s not uncommon for children to move schools and it’s not uncommon for it to cause some distress. Change is a big deal for kids and they’re not as well equipped to handle it as adults. As a parent, there are lots of things you can do to help make the transition easier for your child. The sooner you discuss things with them, the better, as good communication is essential. I have teamed up with Taunton School to offer you some advice.
Firstly, it’s important that you involve your child in the process as much as possible, even if they are only little. When choosing a new school, they should have an input on the decision. It’s important that they feel involved and fully understand the reason why they have to move schools. This will help assure them that you care about their feelings and respect their opinions. Talk to them about any concerns they might have and answer any of their questions.
Make sure your child knows that you are willing to help them maintain relationships with friends from their old school, as this will be a big cause for concern for them. If you are moving house and it will be difficult or even impossible for your child to see their old friends, you can assure them that they can communicate via video chat or social media, or even they could even write letters. Be careful not to suggest that new friends will substitute old friends.
If your child is part of any extra-curricular clubs, they might be worried that they’ll no longer be able to do it at their new school. Help reassure them that this is not the case; sit down together and Google similar clubs near to the new school.
Moving schools can be challenging for your child’s mental health. Once your child has moved to the new school, observe them for any signs of depression or emotional distress. Meet with the teachers and the other parents and do your best to help your child understand that they have your full support.
Changing schools can be an emotionally challenging time for your child. Hopefully these tips can help make the process easier for the whole family.
