Being stuck at home isn’t fun. It’s been a while now too, depending on where you are in the world. The second wave of COVID seems to be about to hit, bringing more months of lockdown. Keeping the family happy and healthy under these circumstances isn’t always easy. Being stuck at home might suit some. But others will hate it. The key to remember is that everyone is different, especially children. You might need to take different approaches in each case. You can read all the tips in the world and they still might not apply to your family. What you read, you need to convert into something digestible, so make sure you consider how individual’s will react to make sure you get it right. These are unprecedented times which may need unique solutions for the short term. Here are some tips to get you started.
Just because a lot of the retail and hospitality sectors are shut down, it doesn’t mean you can’t ensure your children stay healthy. If you need new glasses, you can get them sent with free shipping. If one of them has hearing issues, they’ll be able to get them tested. Health comes first. Any afflictions or illnesses can be fixed and seen to like just before the lockdown so make sure you see them as soon as you can so they don’t get any worse. People have been known to put things off because they’re on lockdown and afraid to get out. Don’t. Hospitals are actively encouraging people to get seen to where possible.
Getting the kids to be active can be difficult, especially if they’re not used to it. You can start off by going for a walk each day. The trick here is to make sure you do this at the same time each day, or as close to the same time as possible. This way you’ll instil a routine which is easier to follow. Bring your whole family. It’s a good time to bond, but also needed to keep them fit. The fresh air will do them the world of good and also be a great way to burn some energy. If you think they need something a little more intense, think about doing a workout in the living room. There are so many fitness workout routines on YouTube which cater to all different levels of fitness. Try to get this done in the morning so they can go on with their day. If you all have bikes, you can go out for a ride instead of a walk. It’s important to vary the activity as much as you can to keep it fresh and enjoyable.
If you’ve got a big family, and you’re all stuck at home, it can be hard for everyone to get their own space and time together. You need to help this along as much as possible. If you have kids who share a room, make sure they can get the time they need to relax. Same with the main living room. Let them watch their shows if you can. You might even want to draw up a rota so that they can’t argue about things and that it stays fair. It won’t be easy to do in certain situations which is why you need to try your best to manage it as best you can.
If you have younger children and they aren’t going to school, then you might want to ensure they get to see their friends. With today’s technology it’s pretty easy. Microsoft teams, Facetime, Zoom; there are lots of apps which can allow a meet up for friends, even if it’s just to see each other’s faces. This can really help with your child’s mental health during lockdown. Whilst it’s not the same as seeing their friends in person, it can be a huge boost to their happiness.
Not being in school will affect some more than others. Especially those who were already struggling with their learning. See this as an opportunity. They can catch up on what they were struggling with at school, putting them back level with those in their class. It does mean you need to find the time to teach them what they’ve missed out on though.
