How To Introduce Meditation to Kids Under 5

As life becomes more fast-paced and uncertain, anxiety is a given. Young children can suffer the most. After all, what’s unpredictable for adults can seem out of control to a child. Over-stimulation from nearly continuous exposure to electronic devices doesn’t help. Parents often wonder what to give a child for anxiety, but have you considered meditation? It may seem unimaginable to calm young kids enough to teach them meditation. With the right approach, though, it can work. By following the suggestions below, you can set your child on a path to a more serene life.

Lead by Example

Although not necessary, it’s beneficial to have your own meditation practice in place before introducing it to your child. Curious kids love imitating the people they admire. During your meditation, your child may join in without any prodding, emulating your actions. This practice is an excellent opportunity for positive reinforcement and instruction. An enjoyable and relaxing bonding experience will encourage kids to meditate with you each day. If your child has trouble resting during naps or at night, kids sleep meditation can support their slumber.

Make It Simple

There’s no right or wrong way to meditate. The main objective is calming the mind while focusing on the present. Sitting with the eyes closed works best for relaxation. Your child may enjoy the lotus posture. Encourage children to take long, deep, slow breaths while noticing their belly rising during the inhale and falling on the exhale. Expect a lot of fidgeting and a wandering mind at first; kids can learn to calm themselves with practice. It’ll be easier for your child once he or she starts recognizing the benefits. If you find that your child needs help focusing, consider homeopathic medicine for anxiety and stress for children.

Provide Visuals

It helps to give a child imaginary visuals to assist with relaxing breathing and focus, such as blowing out a candle. Clasp both hands together and raise both index fingers just in front of the mouth. Keep that position while inhaling slowly. Then, exhale slowly while imagining blowing out a candle. This approach is surprisingly simple; kids can begin practicing solo in just seconds.

Another great strategy for kids is something you can physically show your child for future visualization. Fill the bottom of a mason jar with a thin layer of sand. Then, add enough water to cover the sand by a few inches. Next, shake the jar. The grains of sand will begin swirling. Each sand grain represents a thought (positive or negative). When you put the jar down, the grains start to settle. Show your child how the water (i.e., the mind) becomes more transparent as the “thoughts” calm. Explain to your child that the thoughts don’t disappear, but focusing on peace in the present makes for a clearer head.

In a world full of uncertainties, one thing is sure: Providing your child with proper stress-relieving tools now will return lifelong benefits. Consult the internet for more on meditation ideas for children. Avoid potentially harmful side-effects of prescription medications by exploring homeopathic supplements to give your child a safe alternative for decreasing anxiety and increasing focus.
