How to Choose a Comfy Car

Comfort can make or break your driving experience. You could have the coolest car out there on the road, but if your back starts complaining after 20 minutes, the magic wears off pretty quickly. So how do you choose a comfortable car without overthinking it too much or worrying about hip and back pain? Let’s keep it simple.

  • Do the bum test. When you’re checking out something like a used CUPRA Born, don’t just admire it, sit in it. Properly adjust the seat, lean back, rest your arms and imagine being stuck in traffic for an hour. If it already feels a little bit rubbish, it’s not the one for you. A comfy car should feel right within minutes, not something you have to get used to.

  • Is there any legroom? Nobody likes feeling squished when they’re driving, so whether you’re tall, short, or somewhere in between, space will matter. Stretch your legs out and see how it feels. Are your knees too close to the dash? Do you feel cramped? Even if you’re only doing short trips now, you’ll thank yourself later on for longer drives. Don’t forget to check the back seats too. Your passengers will definitely have opinions and they deserve to be comfortable.

  • Is the car a smooth operator or does it offer a bumpy ride? Some cars glide, others don’t. Comfort isn’t just about the seats, it’s about how the car handles the road for you. During a test drive, pay attention to how it feels over bumped corners and uneven surfaces. If it starts veering off to the left or a right, you might need a tyre alignment before you pay. A comfy car should feel calm, not like it’s reacting dramatically to every little dip in the road.

  • Is it too noisy? You don’t always notice noise levels until you’re stuck with them. Wind noise and engine harm are one thing, but tyre sounds are quite another. They all add up to a loud driving experience, but a quieter car makes everything feel more relaxed. If you have to raise your voice to chat, that’s a clue.

  • Buttons and screens. Comfort isn’t just physical, it’s mental as well. If the controls feel confusing or the touchscreen takes 10 taps to do something very simple, it can get very annoying very quickly. Look for a car setup that feels easy and natural to use. You shouldn’t require a manual just to change the air con.

  • Temperature matters more than you think. While we’re on the subject of comfort, you need to make sure that your car is just right. Not too hot, not too cold, Good air conditioning and good heating and well placed vents make a difference. You want bonus points for heated seats if you like a little extra cosiness on the chilly mornings.

A comfy car isn’t about fancy extras or big price tags, it’s just about how it feels to be in it. You need to trust your body and trust your instincts when you get into the car. They will both help you out to choose whether or not the car is comfy.
