Fine motor skills are a core part of a child’s development, as they can teach children to handle objects, hold hands, tie shoelaces and more. They’re used almost all of the time in our waking moments and training your child to develop their skills early on is a must.
In this guide from a prep school in London we take a look at the ways you can help your child in developing their fine motor skills throughout their childhood.
Water play, playing in the sandbox building castles and board games are all ways children are testing their motor skills. Even simple things such as holding small objects like dice and cards train a child to hold onto something. With sand and water, two completely different textures, children are learning how to use them in different ways like filling up a cup with water or packing a bucket with wet sand.
A favourite among kids and parents is the ease of bringing out the arts and crafts kit. Children have the chance to work on their own creations and get to explore using paintbrushes, glue, glitter and cutting things out with scissors. All of these techniques rely on different parts of the hand.
When your child’s much younger they won’t be receiving homework on a regular basis, but a lot of what they’re taught in school can be transferred to the home as a means of practice. Handwriting and creative writing are two ways younger children can begin to see what their writing style will look like. Homework, when your child is older, will become more of a staple in the home. Continuous writing by hand is a key way of strengthening your child’s writing muscles and seeing what their handwriting style will be like.
