The Importance of Reading to Your Child from an Early Age

Reading is a huge asset to your child’s intelligence, creativity and English practice skills. They can pick up a number of different style books that will make them feel engaged and excited to be reading – from comic books and picture stories to full novels. There’s a lot of important reasons why reading is beneficial for children, as this nursery in Twickenham explains.

Children are learning how to be creative

With a whole world awaiting them in fictional worlds, exciting characters and strong moral values being developed, children will feel creative and inspired in stories that take them away from the real world. These stories can make children express themselves in different ways, become more positive and develop their communication skills.

It’s a perfect way to bond with your child

Reading together before you both set off to sleep gives your child precious time to spend with you and learn about their parents. It also gives you the chance to connect with your child and spend quality time with them, while allowing them to develop their skills at the same time.

Your child is learning to communicate

Through reading your child is understanding the many different ways we can all communicate with each other. It can be through body language, understanding mannerisms and how to speak to others appropriately. Children begin to develop their first words, have more meaningful conversations with their parents and more.

Your child develops a greater understanding of concentration and discipline

When reading to your child, and letting your child take the reins when the time is right, teaches children about how to be patient, how to be respectful when another person is speaking and they’re listening in. It’s a great way to practice with your child how to be disciplined and respectful in front of others and know when they can take their turn to speak.
