Every child has a unique set of skills and they need to be supported in different ways. For instance, some children might be excellent at public speaking and debate skills, but their spelling and grammar needs some attention. Others may be science lovers and excel in STEM subjects, but need help with their confidence and general social skills. Parents can help their kids develop superb social skill by adopting a variety of different techniques. Here are some tips from a private girls’ school.
Start by teaching your child about feelings and how they can be expressed both verbally and through body language. Once they understand how different emotions are expressed, they will be able to behave appropriately when they spot them in other people. For instance, if someone is crying, they can offer a hug or a helping hand.
If your children are still fairly little, arranging lots of play dates is a good idea to help them with their social skills. It’s crucial that they develop relationships and learn to share, take turns and be a polite host. Before their friends come round, tell them that they must do their best to ensure their friend is comfortable during their visit. You should also make them aware of personal space.
As well as play dates, it might be worth encouraging your child to join extra-curricular clubs so that they can meet more people. Depending on the type of activity, the will also develop other important social skills. For instance, joining a football team will teach them the importance of teamwork, while drama club can help your child become more confident.
As a parent, the most important thing you can do for your child, in all aspects of life, is be a good role model. Be respectful and polite to others, help build people up when they’re down and praise and compliment people where appropriate. You also need to demonstrate to your child what type of behaviour you won’t tolerate from others, such as aggression or rudeness. Hopefully they will learn from you how to behave and how to let others behave around them.
Being confident in social situations is such a good skill to have. Not only does it help with confidence and improving mental health, it can help your child to manage their feelings and be an empathetic and kind person.
