Top Tips When Renovating Your House

Home renovation costs can add up quickly, but by doing some strategic planning before you start, you can save costs without cutting corners. Proper planning means you can focus on the renovations that will offer the most returns for the money you spend. For example, renovating a kitchen or bathroom usually offers the most return on your investment. If you don’t have a firm grasp of what you want to do, it can be easy to find yourself doing a project over.

Think about your heating bills

Whether you want to replace an old central heating system, or heat a new extension, choosing electric radiators from the outset could help you save on your heating bills and make your home more environmentally friendly.

If you’re looking for the best electric radiators for this winter, there’s a range of products to choose from. The energy-saving features you can expect from top brands like Best Electric Radiators, Haverland and Rointe include Wi-Fi distance control, energy use statistics, motion detection, and self-programming.

Go for long term gains over short term quick fixes

Taking shortcuts while renovating is not a good idea and what appears to be a quick fix is often counterproductive. You don’t want to have to redo a renovation project because you tried to get it done as quickly as possible.

Replacing a floor is a great way to give a room a facelift but if you are going to put new flooring on top of old material like tile or linoleum, you could find yourself with an uneven surface. If the flooring underneath fails, it affects your new flooring. You should always remove old material before installing new flooring.

Don’t skip the permits

Permit regulations will be different depending on location, but in most cases, you will require them if you plan to do any electrical, plumbing or heating work. There is some extra cost involved in getting a permit but it is worthwhile to prevent getting caught doing work without one.

Permits help to ensure minimum quality standards and if you do the work without a permit and don’t do it correctly, it could prove very costly. For example, mice could nibble on exposed electrical wires or the wires could rub against metal and short-circuit. By trying to add circuits and overloading them, you could easily blow a fuse. By not making the proper connections, you could even cause an electrical fire.

Use the right materials

Duct tape is often the go-to material for DIY enthusiasts but neither duct tape nor other fancy glues or tapes may be the right products to use. When it comes to taping or glueing, there are typically adhesives specific to the particular needs that are least likely to cause problems down the line.

A common error people make when doing renovations is to use the wrong replacement piping. Matching a section of plumbing that needs replacing can be tricky and ill-fitting pipes can cause leaks. Before replacing a portion of copper or steel plumbing pipe with a plastic pipe, find out whether the electrical system uses plumbing pipes for grounding. If so, you can’t replace conductive material like steel or copper with plastic.

Wait until contractors need your business

If you want to use contractors, don’t schedule your renovation at premium times, such as in the height of summer. Suppliers are usually busier, labour is scarcer, and deliveries tend to be slower.

If you use contractors, consider asking them whether they have any good contacts for materials. A contractor may be able to make a few phone calls and come up with leftover materials from other job sites that could make your renovation more affordable.

Make your contribution count

You can reduce your renovation costs by doing some of the work yourself. Some jobs are better left to the experts but there are some things you can do yourself where expertise is not necessary. For example, by doing some of the demolition, you could save money. You can avoid delivery fees by picking up materials yourself. Even if you have to hire a trailer, using it for half a dozen trips or so will save money in the long run.
