Becoming more efficient at work is largely to do with how you spend your time, but also how you use the resources. After all, the more efficiently the office operates as a whole, the better the company will perform. You may even help your employer save money in various ways, which they can choose to invest back into the business to support their staff. If you work for yourself, efficiency is doubly important. Here are some ways you can become more efficient at work.
Start by considering how you start each day. Do you prepare a priority list and split your tasks into more manageable chunks, or do you try and tackle multiple things at once? Being able to multi-task is a great skill, but it’s not always beneficial at work because it might mean that your tasks aren’t getting the attention they deserve. Instead, it’s better to work your way through an organised list so that the urgent projects are dealt with first. Make sure you take regular, short breaks so that you don’t start to feel overwhelmed or experience problems such as eyestrain. This will not help your productivity and will not allow you to perform at your best. You should also try and eliminate distractions where possible; put your phone away and use your breaks to catchup with colleagues. This may not always be easy if you’re working from home with children, but do your best to try and minimise these distractions.
You should also put some thought into how you’re using the facilities and equipment available to you. For instance, do you shut down your computer properly at the end of each day, or do you leave it in standby mode? Making sure all technology is switched off in the evenings will save on electricity, which is not only better for the environment, but it will also help save money on utility bills.
Consider how you are using the printer. Could you be sending things digitally rather than printing everything? Could you reduce the font size to save on paper and ink? Do you print off a practise copy of a large print job to check for mistakes before it’s too late? Changing your print habits might help your employer save a significant amount of money on resources, which could be used to train staff or provide bonus incentives. It might be worth doing some research into green printing to improve the efficiency in the office. Don’t be afraid to share your knowledge with your colleagues so that you can all work together to reach the same goal.
