Technology dominates society and with each passing year, new tech comes to the market and shapes the way we live. Parents tend to struggle when it comes to technology, because they are unsure how much screen time they should allow their children to have. Technology can be a major tool in teaching. However, it can also become addictive and distracting. Mill Hill School explore the pros and cons below.
Keeping your kids engaged all the time is challenging, especially when you work. That’s when technology comes in handy, because it provides a source of entertainment. Children can download educational apps and learn as they play. What’s more, they can access additional information and experience other cultures. For instance, they could watch videos on YouTube of celebrations in foreign countries. They could even use technology to learn another language.
Technology in the classroom can result in more active learning and an abundance of additional teaching resources. Since it’s interactive, teachers can increase engagement within the classroom, because students will likely have more fun. Technology can also automate and speed up a lot of tedious admin task for teachers, giving them more time to dedicate to your children.
Unfortunately technology also offers up an array of new safety risks and concerns with regards to kids. One of the biggest cons of technology is that it can be a big distraction, and can disconnect children (and event adults) from normal face-to-face interactions. What’s more, it also promotes laziness for children, because they no longer have to be active to enjoy themselves.
With regards to school, the digital age makes it easier for students to cheat, because they can easily copy and paste another persons’ work or Google the answers to homework questions. As a result, teachers will find it difficult to know which areas of the curriculum students need extra support with.
