No matter what their age, all children have physical, emotional, and academic needs that their parents, carers and teachers need to accommodate. While their academic and personal lives may seem like separate entities, if they’re struggling in one aspect of their life, the other aspects will also suffer. With that said, it’s important that schools provide a safe, happy and supportive environment for their students, as well as a fantastic education. That’s where the pastoral team step in. I have teamed up with a prep school in the Cotswolds to explore the importance of pastoral care in further detail below.
When your child first starts school, you’ll probably have a look for things like previous exam results or inspection reports, the facilities and the location. However, pastoral care is also something that you should give some consideration. Is there an on-site counsellor who can talk to children who are suffering with mental health issues? What are their anti-bullying policies? Are there study clubs for students who might be struggling with a certain subject? Are there events and activities that help promote community spirit within the school? How regularly to the staff keep in touch with parents? These are all things you should ask when visiting the school, before you enrol your child, because they will help you determine whether or not all of their needs are likely to be met.
It’s absolutely crucial for every school to take a holistic approach towards ensuring all children feel safe and secure and generally able to reach their full potential. Setbacks should be dealt with promptly so that there is nothing in your child’s way throughout their journey to success, on both a personal and academic level. Children need to know that they’re not alone and that there’s always someone they can turn to in times of need, which is what pastoral care can provide.
In most schools, staff are given regular training on various pastoral issues so that they are ready to help the pupils in their care. Parents should try and maintain regular contact with these staff members, particularly their child’s form tutor, so that both parties can take a joint approach in ironing out any creases that may arise.
