Gift buying season is almost upon us! Or in my case, it’s already here since I’ve been pretty much planning for Christmas all year! With three kids to buy for, not to mention extended family and friends, it’s always better to be organised.
My children are getting older now, and now at 12, 10 and 6 I’m grateful that they’ve outgrown the noisy plastic toys they used to love when they were younger. Even my six year old now prefers to play games and activities. That’s why I’ll be treating the kids to gifts from Jaques of London this Christmas.
Jaques of London have eight generations of games and toymaking experience and they’re a one-stop-shop when it comes to toys and games. Established in 1795, Jaques is the oldest games company and sports manufacturer in the world. Not only that, they have been responsible for inventing many well-known games such as Croquet, Snakes and Ladders, Ludo and Tiddly Winks (previously known as Tiddledy Winks). It’s a family run business, passed down from father to son over the generations.
Jaques have a huge variety of traditional wooden toys. They’re classic and timeless and something that can be handed down from generation to generation.
I was lucky enough to receive a Solitaire Marble Game for the purposes of this review. I used to love Solitaire when I was younger. I’ve seen cheap versions with plastic pegs but nothing can replace the original with proper marbles.
The game arrived beautifully packaged, making it the perfect gift. It was inside a lovely box complete with Jaques of London ribbon. I just loved the retro feel to it.
Within the box was a beautiful wooden playing board with 32 multicoloured marbles in a little bag. The board has a grooved edge to hold the marbles while playing and the marbles fit the holes really well without rolling around.
Solitaire is a fun game of strategy and skill which is perfect for helping to develop problem-solving skills and patience. The marbles are placed on all the holes, leaving just the middle hole empty. The object of the game is to remove all but one remaining marble by the end of the game. To remove the marbles you need to hop one marble over another into an empty space. It starts off relatively easy but very quickly becomes more difficult as you start to run out of marbles.
It’s a fantastic solo game (perfect for keeping the kids quiet!) but they can also challenge their friends and family to try and beat or equal their own efforts. I often find the simplest ideas are the best ones and that’s definitely the case with this game. The rules are simple but it involves a lot of strategic planning and patience to complete.
It’s the perfect gift for any child. All three of my kids loved it although my older two children had more success than my six year old!

I was offered this game in return for an honest review. As always opinions are my own.
