How to Raise a Science Lover

Lots of parents feel a little anxious when it comes to helping their kids with science, particularly those who aren’t that great at the subject themselves. You may even just be wondering how to help your child to find an interest in science in the first place, let alone how to help them excel at it. A girls’ independent school has the following guidance.

Introduce Science From An Early Age

There are several career opportunities in science-related industries. With that said, it’s no surprise that lots of parents are keen to encourage a love of this subject within their kids whilst they’re still young. First thing’s first, you should aim to make science something that is discussed frequently within your home. The more habitually your child hears about science related topics when they’re little, the more likely they will grow up to be interested in it.

Encourage Curiosity

It’s wise to always encourage your little ones to ask plenty of questions about the world around them and things that interest them. Don’t turn them away if they ask you something, as they’ll be reluctant to do it again in the future, and it’s an important part of their learning journey. Dinnertime provides a great opportunity for your family to get together at the end of the day and discuss any science related issues that you might have heard of, read about, or learnt in school. As an example, you might have read in the news about a new medical discovery or severe weather warnings in a foreign country. Conversations like this will allow science to become a regular part of life for your children and show them how it can affect a variety of real-life circumstances.

Experiment At Home

In addition to discussing science when you can, you should also try carry out some science-related activities with your kids, particularly when they’re little. There’s so many options when it comes to exploring STEM subjects at home. This could be experiments in the garden, water play in the bath or even just watching a documentary, which will help your child learn some new and fascinating facts.

Summary

There’s so many benefits in encouraging a love for science. Not only could it help your child with their homework, it can broaden their mind and teach them to appreciate the world around them. Loving science is more than just preparing your child for their exams. Embracing their natural curiosity and teaching them to challenge what they think they know, will stand them in good stead for the future.
