Getting a good night’s sleep doesn’t just happen. Most of us know that when we are exhausted, you still aren’t guaranteed to get that good rest. But there are some things that you can do to help yourself.
Stop leaving it until the very last minute to try and get to sleep. Start earlier in the evening. Get into different clothes, wash your hands and face, put your slippers on. Start a routine that gets your brain to begin to recognise you are getting ready to rest.
It is no surprise that playing with your phone, watching telly, scrolling on Facebook will just keep your brain in action rather than letting it wind down and relax. So, leave your phone n a drawer, or outside the room. Or you might even want to set up timers, and blocks so that after a specific time at night you can’t use it.
If you just can’t do without your phone, then it might be time to put it to good use. Calm is an app that has sleep stories that magically help you drift off. There is a charge for the app, but that varies depending on how you purchase it.
Introducing a sleep spray to your room will help you relax. Lavender tends to be the go too, but other people find fresh cotton much more comforting. Rolling essential oils on your pulse points, or lighting a candle for a short time before you get into bed can help you let go of the tensions of the day.
BeddingYour mattress and sheets matter. Too light and you’ll be too cold, too heavy and you’ll be too hot. Lumpy mattresses will ruin your night’s sleep and your back. So check out silentnight mattresses, for options. And it is always worth remembering that not every person will love every bed, so try a few out before committing to one.
When you get into bed and become thirsty, you’ll most likely get up, get a drink, turn a light on to do so, then scroll through your phone… and the knock-on effect is two hours later, you are still wide awake. But now you need to pee. Up you get again. If you try to stay hydrated through the day, you are less likely to run into issues the moment that you lay down to sleep.
If you have to have something to do, try to make it reading. In general, we curl up in a warm and comfortable position. Hopefully, the reading isn’t too heavy and out mind can switch off while we absorb the text inside the book.Don’t Try
When you try to sleep, you actually keep your brain awake – checking if you are sleeping yet. So the best thing to do, is simply not trying to sleep at all, in fact, just try to clear your mind completely, carefully park negative thoughts or ideas that make you tense and slowly unwind.
