Avoid These 4 Common Bathroom Mistakes

The bathroom and kitchen are two of the most significant sections of the house. Whether you plan on selling the property in the future or you consider it your forever home, you will have to upgrade these two spaces at some point.

According to Remodeling magazine, a bathroom remodel would cost around $20,000 on average. It will be a bigger undertaking if you’re adding another bathroom. The overall cost could be somewhere around $47,000 for a mid-scale bathroom and $87,000 for an upscale bathroom.

However, if you plan on selling your home somewhere down the road, the remodel will yield the most returns. A recent study showed that you would get $1.71 for every dollar that you spend for a mid-scale bathroom.

Here are some of the most common pitfalls that most homeowners make when they remodel their bathrooms:

No ventilation

If construction challenges prevent you from adding windows, you must install an exhaust fan on the ceiling or the exterior wall. The exhaust fan will prevent odours from stagnating in your bathroom. Meanwhile, you also need to put a space underneath your bathroom door for added ventilation. You can choose bathroom doors with vents, which are convenient.

DIY

If there is any space in your house that you should never DIY, it should be the bathroom. You can probably get away with other projects such as your bedroom, exterior paint, or backyard. But there are components in your bathroom that should be left to professional tradespeople. It would be a costly fix to repair your DIY bathroom remodel, and your budget will take a significant hit. You need to waterproof your bathroom, for instance, so you do not flood your floor. Plumbing is another major undertaking that you should never try yourself.

Too much spending

Another mistake that homeowners make is to overspend on their bathroom remodel. It’s vital to set a budget with the help of the contractor and stick to it. However, you need to add about 20-30% of your initial budget for overruns and contingencies. You do not need to buy the most expensive fixtures and accessories. Good taste does not necessarily mean high costs. Most professional bathroom outfitters have showrooms and portfolios. They also have design consultants who can help you get the right look you want. If you plan to add more fixtures or to upgrade at a reasonable price, buy a gray-water pump for convenience. It’s not hard as you think, considering there are compact pumps that are modern-looking and not as obtrusive as others are. You will see and feel the difference with an additional pump.

Not Having A Good Shower

A bathtub can add value to your home but if you are limited on space you can remove one and replace it with a shower without negatively impacting the overall listing price. Alternatively an over the bath shower can mean you can have the best of both worlds; a bath to soak in and a shower for a quick eco-friendly clean.

Whatever you do, the crucial thing is that you turn your bathroom into a functional space. You do not have to choose the most expensive fixtures and accessories, but they should not look cheap either. Striking a balance between sticking to your budget and making sure the bathroom looks good is vital to get the most out of your investment.
