Buying every day items, especially as a family of five can be really quite expensive. From books and toys for the children, to groceries and clothes, every purchase can soon add up. Over the years we’ve become a little more savvy when it comes to saving money. Here are some tips we’ve picked on saving money on every day items.
Shopping online has many benefits but one of my favourites is using cashback websites. If you sign up to receive cashback, you can receive money back on purchases you were going to make anyway. We’ve received money back from everything from buying the kids shoes to booking a holiday. It soon adds up, and who doesn’t enjoy money for nothing?!
Shopping around for the best price doesn’t need to be as time consuming as you think. There are plenty websites and apps that can tell you if you’re getting the best price on your purchases. There are comparison websites to ensure you’re getting the best deals on services such as car insurance and broadband deals, while websites such as Google shopping can tell you which stores offers the best price.
Another benefit to shopping online is being able to search for discount codes. Many stores have offers and promotions so be sure to check with a discount code website first to ensure you’re getting the best price possible.
Check whether the store you’re planning on buying from offers any incentives for signing up to their newsletters. Many clothing stores offer a welcome bonus when you add your email address. You can always cancel the emails at any time if you wish to unsubscribe.
When buying certain items, it can be worth waiting for certain deals and offers to come around. For example, TU at Sainsburys have 25% off every half term so I know that is the ideal time to buy items such as kids underwear, pyjamas and school uniforms.
We like to play the lottery every week. As the old saying goes, “you’ve got to be in it to win it”. However don’t always assume you have to pay full price. You can save money on the lottery by checking these promotions.
In the past we have preferred certain brands when doing our grocery shopping, also assuming that a specific brand is just better than others. You don’t know unless you try! We’ve found a lot of supermarket own brand products taste just as nice as the more expensive brands. I’ve also found Aldi cleaning products to be just as good as more expensive well known cleaners.
If your budget allows it always buy in bulk where you can. More often than not it works out much cheaper in the long run to purchase larger quantities of items, especially food and cleaning products. Providing the items are non perishable, it usually worth stocking up when you find a good offer.
Exchanging items with family and friends can save a lot of money on items such as books, clothes and toys. Rather than buying a brand new book, doing a book swap with someone is much more cost effective. Similarly if your child has grown bored of a specific toy, see if a friend would be interested in doing a swap. This not only saves money but is much less wasteful and better for the environment too.
There are many bargains to be found in charity shops. I particularly enjoy buying books for a fraction of the cost in bookstores. They’re also great for kids toys, clothes and accessories. Not only are you getting a bargain but you’re also helping that specific charity. Win win!
