How To Prepare Your Home For The Festive Season

As soon as Halloween is out of the way my mind automatically switches to Christmas mode. I heard my first Christmas advert on the radio yesterday so I’m clearly not alone!

December is, and always has been, my favourite month of the year. It’s also the busiest! I therefore try to get as much prepared in November as I can, so I can enjoy December without too much stress.

Part of that is getting the house ready for all the Christmas decorations. We always aim to have our decorations up when the advent calendars are out, so usually the last day in November. Which gives me four weeks to get my house in some kind of order!

Here’s some tips to try and get your home ready for the festive season.

Clear out the clutter.

We need all the free space we can when it comes to Christmas. We need room for the Christmas tree, along with surface space for all our festive ornaments and trinkets. It’s time to be ruthless!

Sort out unwanted toys.

With three kids our house is full of toys, and not all of them get played with. Every November we have a sort through and anything that no longer gets played with is donated to charity. I get the kids involved and they seem to enjoy knowing that other children will get to play with their old toys.

Sort the kitchen cupboards.

This time of year I have a big sort of our kitchen cupboards. I dig out anything that’s going to need eating and try and make space for the extra food that will be filling our kitchen in December. It’s also a good time to defrost the freezer!

Do last minute renovations.

It may seem like the last thing you feel like doing, but it’s the perfect time to do those last minute renovations before Christmas. You’re likely to have more visitors over the festive period so now is the time to do that decorating you’ve been putting off! We’ve recently painted our kitchen and bathrooms and although I don’t particularly enjoy doing it, I do feel better now it’s done. Similarly, if you’re looking for new flooring, now is the time! Laminate flooring would make our lives so much easier, especially with needles dropping from the Christmas tree. I’d much rather sweep than hoover!

You could also transform any room with a new rug. I particularly like wool rugs for warming up a room, especially if you are putting down laminate.

Clear out your clothes.

You may have already packed away your summer wardrobe for your winter clobber, but it’s still worth going through and asking yourself “am I ever going to wear this?” Unwanted clothes can be passed on to charities or can be sold on eBay or selling sites on Facebook. It’s always handy to have a bit money during the festive period.

These are just a few things you can do to try and minimise the clutter and get your house ready for the Christmas decorations! Is there anything you always try to do before the festive period? Let me know in the comments!

  • Great post, I will definitely take some tips from this, we have so much unwanted toys just chucked into the toy boxes which definitely need sorting. You also have such a beautiful living room.
I’ve only just come across your blog as I also love December and I’m currently searching for festivities to do with the kids. Found you from looking at the Chester Zoo lanterns xx
