Helping Your Child Develop Their Vocabulary

A good vocabulary is well known for being part of major success when it comes to a child’s academic development. Knowing and using a broader vocabulary is helpful when it comes to understanding what others say and how to talk and write in an engaging way. It is also a great way for youngsters to understand the world around them better.

As a parent, it’s important to support your child when it comes to developing their vocabulary, as it makes a massive difference. One of the greatest ways to help your child improve their vocabulary at home is to play word games and activities. Not only is this a great way to help your child boost their academic skills, but it is also a fun and engaging way to bond with the family. Here is some advice from a Kindergarten in Earlsfield to get you started.

Talk to them on a regular basis.

This sounds easy enough but making conversation a priority when it comes to helping your child develop their vocabulary, is one of the most effective ways for them to pick up on new words. Young children are like little sponges, so it is important to use the right language in front of them from the start so they absorb it quickly. Expose your child to different words. You can do this by naming objects, using numbers and introducing words that describe emotions.

Read together.

The key to a good set of vocabulary is a love of reading. Sit with your child every evening and read together. Don’t stick to just stories. Introduce non-fiction books and comics to them as this will expose your child to a wider range of words.

Play word games together.

I spy and Scrabble are some of the most popular and entertaining games out there for children. Whilst they are having fun searching for words and letters, they are indirectly working on expanding their vocabulary. Remember, when in doubt, make it fun!
