Birth Control Around the World with Lovima

A woman’s right to safe and effective birth control is such a topical subject right now.

The change to abortion laws in America have been controversial and have been the subject of great debate. One thing a woman should always be aware of is what rights she has when it comes to her reproductive health, and what contraception is available.

Studies have shown that having access to effective family planning techniques can improve a woman’s health, well-being and autonomy, as well as prevent unwanted pregnancies.

I’m lucky to live in the UK where access to both contraception and abortions is available for those who need it. However, that isn’t the case across the world.

Here I’ll discuss what contraception is available within the United Kingdom and how it can be accessed.

Contraception in the UK – Government Funded

Within the UK contraception is available for free, government-funded contraception. This can be in the form of oral contraception, implant, injection or intra-uterine device. These forms of contraception are accessible via prescription and there is no charge.

To obtain a prescription an appointment with a doctor or family planning professional will usually be needed.

Contraception in the UK – Over-the-Counter Purchases

Contraception is now available to purchase over the counter without a prescription. Lovima is an oral contraceptive brand that contains desogestrel and is available without prescription, after a consultation with a registered pharmacist.

You don’t need a prescription so an appointment with a nurse or doctor is unnecessary. This reduces any wait time and gives women an extra choice when it comes to contraception.

Abortion Laws in the UK

The UK allows access to safe pregnancy terminations. Under the Abortion Act 1967, women can access abortions for personal reasons up to 23 weeks and 6 days of pregnancy, and there is no gestational limit if there is evidence of significant risk to a woman’s life or a fatal foetal abnormality.

Abortion laws across the world

Not all countries are as liberal as the UK and access to safe abortions is much more difficult. In some cases, such as The Philippines, abortion is illegal in all cases, even if the mother’s life is at risk.

To help woman across the world know their rights when it comes to reproductive health, Lovima have created this interactive map. The map features a selection of countries which, when selected, give details regarding the accessibility of contraception, the availability of over-the-counter contraceptives and details on abortion laws for each nation.

I found it really interesting to read how the laws vary from nation to nation and it makes me feel thankful for the reproductive care we receive in the UK.
