Today the kids and I were excited to head down to one of our favourite theatres, Waterside Arts in Sale. We’ve never attended a show at the Waterside that we didn’t love so we were excited to go along to see Alice in Wonderland.
KD Theatre Productions and Scott Ritchie Productions have teamed up to bring the Alice in Wonderland Tour to venues across the UK this Autumn (there are also dates in May 2020.) Audiences are invited to follow Alice down the rabbit hole and watch as her adventure unfolds. The performance features new music and lyrics as the classic story is retold.
One of the great things about watching shows at Waterside is you’re always guaranteed a good view. The Robert Bolt theatre is an intimate venue so regardless of where you are sat you know you’ll have a good view of the stage.
There are plenty of songs from start to finish, which my four year loved. She often becomes disinterested and fidgety if there’s too much dialogue so it was great that there were so many musical numbers. She was dancing along in her seat!
There’s a small cast of just five, the main character obviously being Alice while the other cast members showed their versatility by taking on various roles. Francesca Pim was excellent as all her characters but really shone as the Queen of Hearts. Both myself and the kids particularly loved Ashley Shackell’s portrayal of the Cheshire Cat. His mannerisms and humour really brought the character to life.
The staging was well designed and I have to give a special mention to the costume design. My daughter was entranced by Alice’s sparkly blue dress and The Queen Of Hearts ensemble was perfect for the ruthless monarch.
All three of my kids, ranging from four to ten, loved the show which is a miracle in itself. They never usually agree on anything!
The cast were available at the end of the show for photographs which was a nice touch. All in all, it was a lovely afternoon out.
The tour is moving on to various venues throughout October, check out the dates here to see if they’re at a theatre near you. We would definitely recommend a visit!
There are some fab shows heading to Waterside Arts over the next few weeks. For more details please see the Waterside website. We’re so excited for Stick Man next week!
