5 Things You Should Do in Your Garden in January

There are heaps of things you can still do in the winter in your garden. Looking for some guidance? Here are 5 things you could take a look into.

Rake your lawn

Moss and other undergrowth can occur in the winter, especially when it’s been raining and windy where the leaves have covered the grass. This is when you should be raking the leaves enough to keep your lawn clear and dispose of them in your compost bin.

Prepare for the cold snaps

If it’s meant to snow, or there’s ice forming in the grass, it’s best to avoid standing on the grass until it’s cleared away naturally or brushed away by yourself. Plants and flowers can also suffer from this, and while tempting to move them around it can cause damage to their growth. Be wise during these colder periods.

Prepare the crops or plants for spring

While your winter crops, if any are laid out, should be growing nicely by now, it’s also a great time to prep the area for any other future plants you want laid down this year. Plan ahead if necessary, such as getting the plant beds or veg plots ready for use once it starts getting warmer.

Continue pruning

Some of your plants and flowers will lie dormant during these colder months, but it doesn’t mean that the pruning and maintenance also stops. If you have roses for example, they should be pruned continually so that they can continue to climb across your garden. Any plants that are on a lattice frame will nicely grow upwards and around.

Consider any DIY work

It’s a much quieter time for many businesses, but it doesn’t mean you can’t plan ahead now or get contractors in for a quote. You could look at cements in London if you live locally to the area, add new fence panels, or look at your drainage.
